Peapod Adobe Youth Voices Academy

August 15th, 2011

The Black Eyed Peas have always been one of Ike’s favorite groups. He’s pretty sure his first music download off of iTunes was, ‘Don’t Phunk with My Heart.’

The hip hop ensemble which includes, Fergie, Will.I.AM., Apl.de.ap and Taboo are not only a world renowned group of talented artists they are also givers. The B.E.P have taken their fame and fortune and put it to a great cause by creating The Peapod Foundation.

The foundation was started by Will.i.am as a foundation that encourages social change by uniting people through the universal language of music. A section of the Foundation went into developing The Peapod Music and Arts Academy which opened in 2008. The Academy is a cutting edge arts school that caters to disadvantaged and foster kids aged 13-19 in South Central LA. The Black Eyed Peas have gathered accomplished media makers and performers to lead hands-on classes and industry field trips designed to inspire in the areas of music, film, poetry, dance, acting and digital media.

The Black Eyed Peas’ Peapod Foundation and the Adobe Youth Voices began another major effort to bring music and art education to underprivileged youth not only in Los Angeles but throughout America by launching a series of Peapod Adobe Youth Voices Academies. The dynamic pairing has already opened four Academies nationally. With the help of Fergie and the rest of the Black Eyed Peas they just unveiled a fifth Youth Academy in San Jose California on August 6th 2011. An estimated 300 kids are expected to enroll at the academy every year to study film music and art.

Power to the young budding artists!

IKE Heart’s Radio

August 8th, 2011

Tickets to the two day iHeartRadio music festival in Las Vegas sold out in ten minutes!

What a bummer because it’s said to be the, “biggest live music event in radio history.”

The lineup is incredible: Lady Gaga, Coldplay, Nicki Minaj, the Black Eyed Peas, Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood, Bruno Mars, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and more big names will be announced throughout the summer. The concert will take place September 23rd and 24th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. I know it’s a buzz kill that the tickets are already sold out but you can catch the concert on your mobile iPhones, Driods and other Smartphone devices and online as they will be streaming the event live. The only way to get tickets now is to listen to Clear Channel on www.iHeartRadio.com or go to the iHeartRadio Facebook page and enter to win a free trip to Vegas for the event.

Ike’s got his ear glued to the radio and his eye on the prize.

Dancin’ on the Strip

August 4th, 2011

Heading to Vegas for some summer fun and want to escape the heat with an amazing show that will blow your mind? Well guess who’s been takin’ over the strip? Thats right America’s Best Dance Crew’s season 1 winners, the Jabbawockeez. In a full scale Vegas production with the lights, sound, and drama and comedy that is sure to have you groovin’ in your seats and put a smile on your face.

The show is called, “MUS.I.C” and it has been on the Monte Carlo Stage for almost a year now. It premiered at the MGM Grand’s Hollywoood Theatre and received rave reviews. It has even pulled in some hot celebrities like Britney Spears who brought her young boys, Preston and Jaden to enjoy the show. Apparently she was dancing in her seat to Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’, which I’m guessing means she liked it!

Jabbawokkeez are known for their signature white masks and white gloves that conceal their individual identities and let the dancing speak for its self. Ike idolizes the group, I mean they were the start of his favorite TV show, ABDC which has launched in success and just wrapped up their 6th season. We’ve heard rumors that the 7th season of ABDC may be an All-Star season where the winners of the previous seasons will compete which will be an ultimate battle of the best of the best for the Best Dance Crew title. It’s only a rumor, but wouldn’t that be siiick!

“Tune in to MÜS.I.C., an audiovisual story of inspiration brought to life through the harmonization of sound and movement with acclaimed dance crew Jabbawockeez. Dressed in expressionless white masks and white gloves, these one-of-a-kind dancers guide your attention to visualize the music through their intricate moves, leaving audiences in awe.”

Ike is begging for a ticket to Vegas to see the Jabbawockeez live on stage!

Ike Celebrates National Dance Day

August 1st, 2011

National Dance Day was this weekend and many people got up and grooved to LMFAO’s Party Rock Anthem as they mastered (or attempted to master) Tabitha and Napoleon form Nappytab’s dace routine to celebrate the holiday. The non-profit organization that came up with National Dance Day named Dizzyfeet was founded by “So You Think You Can Dance” judge, Nigel Lythgoe, “Dancing with the Stars” judge, Carrie Ann Inaba, as well as Adam Shankman and Katie Holmes. The organization helps underprivileged young people realize their dreams of becoming professional Dancers and to improve access to dance education in the United States. This is the second annual National Dance Day and this year the event took place at Six Flags parks across the country as well as in people’s living rooms, back yards and various dance studios.

Ike had to get in on the fun in someway so he took his own spin off of the NappyTabs choreography and danced his way through Venice Beach, CA. Here’s the proof:

Comic-Con 2011

July 28th, 2011

It seems like everyone who was in Southern California this past weekend headed down to San Diego to join in the madness at Comic-Con 2011. From Star Wars drones to Superman’s to full body suit wearing Avatar’s almost everyone was dressed up and ready to enjoy the biggest event in Comic loving, game playing, movie fanatic super nerds. (And “nerds” is not a derogatory term because nerds do rule the world.) Major directors like Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson to The Twilight Saga actors; Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson to major A list stars like Charlize Theron, Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig just name a few of the big names who showed up to this four day event. Frankly those eight stars don’t even begin to account for the huge number of celebrities that made appearances at the 41st official Comic-Con event.

Out of all of those celebs and all of the unique costumes we think Ike definitely fit in and stood out in good way. He definitely brought a swagger to Downtown San Diego that no one else could. Check out this new video of Ike dancing with some of his new friends on Sunday at Comic-Con:

Savage Beauty-Alexander McQueen

July 21st, 2011

Though our headquarters are located in sunny southern California, we had to give a shout out to one of the most incredible displays of fashion ever conceived that is currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. (We are praying that the exhibit will venture cross country to LA soon!)

Alexander McQueen, a British born visionary, has created designs that are incredible works of art that range from hedonistically creepy to flowingly gorgeous. He has left an undeniably twisted and brilliant mark on the fashion world. This exhibit pays tribute to the man behind the garments who unfortunately took his own life in February 2010 after the death of his mother. The exhibition displays his postgraduate collection from 1992 to his final runway presentation which took place post mortem in February 2010. The Met says, “Mr. Queen challenged and expanded the understanding of fashion beyond utility and conceptual expression of culture, politics and identity.” He was not just a fashion icon he was an artist whose mode of expression was fashion. The exhibition features approximately one hundred ensembles and seventy accessories from McQueen’s 19 year career. He has created designs for Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Mikhail Gorbachev and even Prince Charles.

While in New York we were lucky enough to enjoy this truly exquisite and intriguing exhibit. The walls are filled with McQueen’s memorable quotes. One of our favorites being, “I want to empower women. I want people to be afraid of the women I dress.” A leather skin tight dress with Vulture skulls as shoulder pads I am sure would make any man take a step back from a women who proudly wears it. Another gem of the exhibit is from McQueen’s 2006 runway show which featured the iconic hologram presentation of Kate Moss in one of McQueen’s billowing gowns where she seems to take on the ethereal appearance of an angel floating in mid air.

If you are in New York this summer, then you must check out this exhibit. The exhibit has already drawn over 400,000 visitors and numbers are expected to spike in the last weeks of the exhibit.

Ike has mad respect for Alexander McQueen and loves his fierce designs.

Watch the Throne

July 18th, 2011

Ike is squirming in his two tone Nike Airs as he tries to patiently wait for the drop of the highly anticipated collaboration album by two major world icons. Jay-Z and Kanye West have been collaborating on Jay-Z’s new album entitled, Watch the Throne. It is set to be released on August 2nd which means only 14 days!

However there have been talks that the album won’t be complete by said date! We have already listened to ‘H.A.M’ the lead track off the album and some basic stripped down beats of ‘Thunder’ and ‘Beautiful Girls’ two other fresh tracks and it had Ike head bobbin’. Jay-Z claims that the album will be “different” which I am sure means it will be AWESOME. The Jigga man himself held a listening party with MTV and played eleven tracks that may or may not be on the album that included some songs by Odd Future’s, Frank Ocean and of course the Diva herself Beyoncé.

If this isn’t good enough for you, Jay-Z is also working on his own album. He says that, “I know exactly the tone and the whole feel,” he revealed. “It’s different. It’s not weird.” Ike is sure that different is always better. Hova foreva.

The End of an Era

July 14th, 2011

I remember the first one like it was ten minutes ago when in reality it was ten years ago. It’s an incredible feeling to grow up with something so timeless but unfortunately all good things have to come to an end. Luckily I am sure this multibillion dollar franchise will come to an end with a bang.

It all started with four words, “You’re a Wizard Harry,” uttered by the loveable giant Ruebius Hagrid way back in the first book/movie. And since then there are words in our vocabulary that if uttered 20 years ago people would have thought you were completely crazy. Words like; Muggles, Quidditch, Berty Bots Every Flavored Beans, and Dementors. We’ve grown to love Harry, Hermione, Ron and Nevil just as much as we hate Draco Malfoy, Severus Snape and He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named; (ok we’ll say it..Lord Voldemort). But it all ends tonight at midnight.

It’s a bittersweet ending to not only the movie series but to many of our childhoods as in 2001 we were the same age as Harry Potter when he got his letter announcing that he was in fact a wizard. Harry grew up with us. And even though we weren’t fighting dark lords, giant snakes nor participating in major magical competitions we connect to Potter on so many levels. And even if you weren’t 11 when the first movie came out you probably can attest that the boy who fought off all evil with bravery, passion and most of all love will be missed on the big screen.

This new and final instillation, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 will be much darker than the previous films as many important characters’ lives will unfortunately be taken away, there will be romance, battles, and intense moments as we watch Harry take on his ultimate enemy, Lord Voldemort for the last time.

Even thought this is the last movie the joy and love of Harry Potter will live in our hearts forever.

Ike will be clad in glass, cape and scar for the midnight showing of Harry Potter tonight, will you?

Virtual Pop Star

July 11th, 2011

We all know that the new cutting edge electronics come straight out of Japan–like robot pets that respond to commands and computers that are so advanced they can practically read your mind–but how about a superstar that is completely computer generated?! Bands like the Gorillaz (Who we Love!) and Dethklok have sort of crossed that line by featuring animated bands with the band members’ identities sort of kept secret. On tour they play live with animations projected on large screens above the performers but this is something completely new. Hatsune Miku is a J-Pop character developed by Crypton Future Media inc. and associated with Vocaloid synthetic voice software. Hatsune is a completely computer generated performer who has been remixed visually and musically by fans. The synthesized singing that the fans can create is of unprecedented quality and remarkable realism by just typing in lyrics and melody. With her flowing turquoise pig tails, she shot to fame by a series of viral videos and she performs live on a double mirror hologram projection on center stage with a live band composed of humans playing beside her.

She had her first U.S. performance at Anime Expo 2011 in Los Angeles and many were blown away by the technology that made her seem so real. LA Weekly reported that, “she had more costume changes than Kylie Minogue but her dance moves seemed so lifelike that there is almost something human about her.” She’s has already appeared on tracks with artist like Japanese indie pop group the Aprils and Stephanie Yanez.

Ike is impressed and has a little crush on Hatsune, one day he’d love to be a performing B-boy hologram next to Hatsune.

Art in the Streets

July 7th, 2011

Who ever thought that museums are fuddy duddy just got trumped by the MOCA who has caught up with the times. The current exhibit called Art in the Streets is off the charts cool. It’s the first major survey of street art and graffiti featured in a reputable U.S. museum. It tracks graffiti all the way back to the 1970s to the major movement it has become today. It showcases 50 of the most dynamic artists and of course will concentrate on Los Angeles’ role in the evolution of street art. Not only does it emphasize Los Angeles’ role but it also goes world wide from London to New York and San Francisco to Sao Paulo. It shows how each culture’s expressions changed and grew in attitude and style.

But what if you don’t want to pay a museum fee to see graffiti, I mean you can easily go down to Venice beach where the walls are covered with some awesome art. Well luckily enough Bansky a highly reputable British street artist just sponsored a new event at the MOCA called free Mondays at Art in the Streets. Bansky, who uses many clever and bizarre pop culture references in his art pieces, agrees with us, “I don’t think you should have to pay to look at graffiti. You should only pay if you want to get rid of it.” This will make it possible for anyone and everyone to see the exhibit. So thanks Bansky for making art accessible to everyone.

Ike and his graffiti aficionado Ramone are going to swing by the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA this Monday to check out these sick masterpieces.

Free Mondays at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA are every Monday from 11am to 5pm June 13 through August 8, 2011.
